Role of Perceptual Similarity in Comprehending Visual Metaphors: Evidences from Eye-Movement Study

Since Richards argued, thought is metaphoric, and proceeds by comparison, and the metaphors of language derive there from, there have been many approaches to consider metaphor as a conceptual phenomenon. Conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff and his colleagues argues that human cognition is organized in conceptual schemas that are subconscious and are used automatically. Language draws on these cognitive schemas hut is not identical with them. Consequently, verbal metaphors are surface manifestations of metaphorical thinking, and metaphor is fundamentally conceptual, not linguistic, in nature.
