INTER-FIRM COLLABORATION ON NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: EXPLORATORY CASE STUDIES OF CHINESE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES

Inter-firm collaboration on new product development (NPD) is a defining feature in the corporate landscape. In this paper, we challenge the utility-based analysis of firm’s engagement in inter-firm collaboration for NPD purposes. Instead, we draw out firms’ NPD life cycle to show that inter-firm collaboration is highly contextual and embedded. The research results revealed dynamism of collaborative networks in relation to the key stages of NPD process.
