TECHNOLOGY SUBSTITUTION IN THE PRESENCE OF NETWORK EFFECTS: FROM BARCODES SYSTEM TO EPC SYSTEM

摘要：

The substitution of EPC system for BarCodes system is a typical technology substitution in the presence of network effect. The purpose of this paper is to investigate substitution conditions and timing of the substitution of EPC for BarCodes system. The results show that the huge network size of BarCodes system is not the block of the adoption of EPC system. The lower degree of substitution between technological advance and network size, and the faster EPC system come into maturity phase, the less time it needed for EPC system substitute BarCodes system.
