HOW TO RAISE OUR BABIES? ORGANIZATIONAL CONSEQUENCES OF PUBLIC SUPPORTING INITIATIVES FOR FOSTERING PRODUCT INNOVATION IN NEW EUROPEAN VENTURES

This paper aims to get an in-depth understanding on which types of public support are more effective for fostering product innovation among both new ventures and established firms. With this purpose, it is suggested two logistic regression models in a cross-national sample comprising 5,238 firms in 27 European countries. The models were tested in two subsamples differentiating between new ventures and incumbents. Results show that there are significant differences on the effectiveness of the different kinds of innovation policy instruments in the subsamples. For new ventures, support for attending or participating on trade fairs, networking with companies and networking with universities and research centres are the most effective. On the contrary, tax reductions for R&D expenditures are the most effective for incumbents. This gives rise to interesting insights for theory development in both, the entrepreneurial and policy making fields.
