FARMERS & RANCHERS AS INVENTORS & ENTREPRENEURS: LESSONS FROM THE FIELD
The purpose of this presentation is to examine how these farmers & rancher perform the task of inventing and/or innovating new products and in some cases new services. “Inventing is used to describe the process of creating something new. The “newness factor ranges from original to the world to a small increment of newness. “Innovation, implies taking the idea and commercializing it for economic and in some cases societal gain. Farmers/ranchers may carry out both functions. Our study employs a sample of 120 farmers/ranchers who have invented and/or developed new products for their own or the use of others. We report findings on the challenges encountered that farmers and ranchers experience in innovating new products and inventions; the sources of assistance used by the farmer/rancher inventor; and the key lessons learned during the entire innovation process. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to report on their experiences as inventors, innovators, & entrepreneurs.
