ABSORPTIVE CAPACITY: HOW KNOWLEDGE ABSORPTION SCOPE, ENVIRONMENTAL TURBULENCE AND KNOWLEDGE COMPLEXITY INFLUENCE ORGANIZATIONAL OUTCOMES

This paper examines how knowledge absorption from knowledge complexity, knowledge absorption scope, and environmental turbulence determine a firm’s advances absorptive capacity and influence its organizational outcomes. Using a formal model and a case study, we first argue that enlarging knowledge absorption scope can not always improve a firm’s performance. A firm could achieve significantly higher performance by enlarging its knowledge absorption scope only from a low band to a medium band or absorbing highly complicated knowledge. The impact of knowledge absorption scope on corporate performance decreases as the scope increases from a low band to a medium band or firms absorb highly complicated knowledge. Second, we find that knowledge complexity positively moderates the relationship between knowledge absorption scope and a firm’s performance. This is also conditioned on the scope switch from a low band to a medium band. Third, results show that the rate of environmental turbulence can not influence the relationship between knowledge absorption scope and a firm’s performance. On the contrary, the range of environmental turbulence positively moderate the effect of knowledge absorption scope on a firms’ performance, when a firm enlarges this scope from a low band to a medium band.
