DOES DIVERSITY REALLY MATTER FOR TEAM INNOVATION: A META-ANALYSIS
Given the prevalence of diversified teams aimed at facilitating team innovation in the real world and reported inconsistent research findings, this study was expected to clarify some confusion in the literature by exclusively focusing on the relationship between team diversity and team-level innovation outcomes. Twenty-six independent effect sizes were meta-analyzed. Results demonstrated that demographic diversity had negative effects on team innovation (ρ = -.122) while job-related diversity had no impact on team innovation. Results also indicated that the nature of innovation moderated the relationship between job-related diversity and team innovation. Job-related diversity was positively related to incremental innovation (ρ=.111), and negatively related to radical innovation (ρ = -.072).
