ENVIRONMENT, NETWORK INTERACTIONS AND INNOVATION PERFORMANCE OF CLUSTERS: EVIDENCES FROM GERMANY, NETHERLANDS AND CHINA

Current research so far has done relatively inadequate in studying the environment, factor and the mechanism of interaction of clusters, as well as their impacts on the innovation performance of those member companies. This paper compares three clusters of three countries from the perspectives of hard environment, soft environment, factors from supply and demand sides, and network mechanism. It is found that the center of excellence behaves well among nearly all aspects, while the spatially narrowly distributed specific center of innovation mainly exploits benefits from its concentrated sector. For the Chinese comprehensive technology incubator, relatively limited geographical space and broad sectoral distribution endow it with unclear strength, implying the still lack of interconnectedness and industry relatedness mentioned by Porter 23.
