An Overview of Desalination Technology in Pakistan

Lacking unlimited supplies of potable water, Pakistan has to depend on the desalination processes of brackish water and seawater to satisfy the everincreasing demands. These demands are expected to reach the 1,112 MGD (millions gallons per day) only for Karachi city in the year 2012. Apart from Karachi, for the coastal areas of Balochistan and Sindh, the only answer appears to be seawater desalnation. A concerted effort is required to produce potable water from the Arabian Sea as well as from high salinity wells in Southern regions. The coastal regions of Sindh and Balochistan are also witnessing rapid urban and industrial growth, which require good quality water. Installation of largesize seawater desalination plants based on Multistage Flash Distillation (MSF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) are being considered seriously. It appears that desalination and water reuse may contribute almost twenty-five (25) percent of the water requirement in these areas. Many plants have sprung rapidly in the past years. Most of the plants are based on RO Technology. In addition to that during the last year Pakistan saw the application of Nanofiltration (NF) also. The Karachi City Government has promised to construct a very large size plant with a capacity of 95,000 m3/day in Karachi. Many large size desalination plants with a capacity of 40,000 to 95,000 cubic meters per day are under planning stage. The government of Pakistan has offered unparalleled incentives for investment in desalination sector. All import taxes have been waved for importing all kind of equipment related to the desalination industry. The president of Pakistan, himself has offered to provide all kind of constitutional, legal and financial protection for the investors. This paper presents the current water availability and needs, growth and development of desalination technology in Pakistan. R also discusses the current status on desalination and water reuse and future prospects.
