Pilot Study of Microfildtration Membrane System as Pre-Treatment for Reverse Osmosis Seawater Applications

Because of rapid economic growth in coastal regions in China, there is a severe shortage for supply of fresh water. Seawater desalination using reverse osmosis (RO) has gained popularity as an alternative water supply to supplement fresh water sources to meet industrial and municipal demands. The performance of a RO system is closely related to the effectiveness of pretreatment and the type of water intake. Conventional treatment technologies as RO pretreatment typically include coagulation, sedimentation, and granularmedia filtration. The effectiveness of the conventional treatment process depends greatly on proper coagulation and is sensitive to changes in water quality. Therefore, enhancing pretreatment of RO is very important to improve the process efficiency. Compared to conventional treatment technologies, low-pressure membranes (microfiltration and ultrafiltration) as RO pretreatment provide high quality water to RO systems regardless of the type of water intake and variations in water quality. This paper summarizes three pilot studies using microfiltration (MF) for RO pretreatment at different sites on coastal regions in China. Pilot studies were conducted at different types of water intake (i.e., seawater lagoon and open intake), with and without pretreatment (coagulation with ferric chloride). The results of all three studies demonstrated that microfiltration reliably provided a high quality of filtered water regardless of the water intake type and the quality of the source water. MF filtrate in all three pilot studies had turbidity less than 0.1 NTU and SDI ranging from 1.5 to 2.2 on average. All three pilot studies demonstrated a system recovery>96% with flux rates ranging from 75140 LMH. Coagulation with ferric chloride at one pilot site enhanced MF performance with increased operating flux and lower operating pressures, presumably due to the removal of constituents in the source water that causes membrane fouling.
