Factors Affecting the Life Time of MSF Evaporator

Coupling MSF evaporator with power plant to form what is known as dual purpose plant is the most economical way to desalinate sea water. This is in turn would save up to 50％ of the energy required if the evaporator is operated separately. As a rule of thumb power plant expected life time based on long operating experience and technology and the type of fuel is 40-50 years. Early days of desalination by thermal MSF process, there was no documented information about the expected life time of MSF distillers. The main material of construction of the evaporator was Carbon Steel. The corrosion allowance was high particularly in the high temperature stages as a result of the severe corrosive environment.
