Quality of Irrigation with RO Reclaimed Wastewater Mixed with Tertiary Treated Wastewater

Conventional UF+RO (Ultra filtration with reverse osmosis) deprive reclaimed wastewater of nutrients and essential elements for plant growth. For use as agricultural irrigation water, external fertilizers are usually added to the permeate from conventional RO (reverse osmosis) treatment, or the permeate is blended with another water supply that is rich in nutrients and trace elements. Treated municipal wastewaters that are reused in Kuwait are both tertiary and RO advanced treated effluents. These effluents are mixed together at central storage reservoirs located in a DMC (Data Monitoring Center). This paper describes the DMC’s central effluent storage facility and uses ideal mixing principles to assess the effect of mixing tertiary effluents with RO permeate on the suitability of the final produced water for reuse as irrigation water.
