Water Quality Concerns on Recycling Municipal Wastewater for Industry-Dutch Case Study
With the population growth, both mumcipal and industrial water demand are expanding. Low land areas, such as the Netherlands, are then facing problems of lack of reliable fresh water especially in the areas with brackish groundwater. As increasing water demand is irreversible and the total usable water resource is nearly constant, industries are starting to reclaim wastewater as their water sources. However, most industries are still hesitating to use reclaimed water, because of the possible effect of reclaimed water quality on the safety of industrial equipment, the continuity of industrial processes and health. In this paper, the water quality concerns are investigated in combination with a Dutch case study. In the Netherlands, since February 2007, 7500 m3/d of treated wastewater from the Terneuzen community is effectively reused for the Dow chemistry Site. The industrial water treatment plant consists of an integrated membrane system (IMS), including continuous microfiltration (CMF) and two-stage RO. Through the IMS, WWTP effluent is reused for a source of polished water plant and to further produce boiler feed water, and then, the boiler blowdown water is treated and reused again as cooling water. The effects of WWTP effluent water qualifies on the IMS in Terneuzen are discussed. WWTP effluent is proven to cause less corrosion to the IMS than the alternative source and helps the IMS to yield 20% more recovery. However, the bio-fouling problem still exists. This case indicates the economic benefits and technological efficiency of recycling municipal wastewater for industrial use.
