Biodegradable Antiscalant for Seawater Reverse Osmosis

A biodegradable antiscalant based on polycarboxylic acid (PCA) has been developed by BWA Water Additives that is also phosphorus free and nitrogen free for use in Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems. Data Will be presented demonstrating its biodegradability properties using the OECD 306 method for seawater. In addition laboratory tests showing PCA’s ability to control calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate and barium sulfate deposition under sea water conditions. Within these tests a comparison of the PCA was made to a phosphonate that is currently used in the field. To mimic realistic conditions a RO Pilot Plant was used to confirm the scale control properties of PCA’s in seawater.
