New Combined Chlorine Disinfection for Bio-fouling Control

Up dated RO systems for Seawater, Brackish water, and Waste water recovery are highly advanced in terms of high Salt rejection, high Energy recovery, and high Water recovery.On the other hand, the troubles on RO systems are always with more Bio-fouling, more membrane Deterioration by oxidization, and more Scale precipitations. It is currently very common that continuous dosing and/or intermittent dosing of the effective free Chlorine by NaOCI to make disinfection to the pretreatment systems to minimize Bio-fouling of RO membranes. This method had been confirmed as effective in the long history of RO systems operation however, this requires sensitive carefulness in operation. It is well known that very close attention is required to minimize deterioration by oxidization even for CTA membranes for Seawater RO systems. And it is often seen that PA membranes are deteriorated by oxidization even in the system in which free chlorine is neutralized to zero by dosing Sodium Bi-sulfite due to delicateness of the chemical reactions of Free chlorine and Sodium Bi-sulfite. There is always a risk that membrane deterioration takes place rapidly under the presence of Heavy metals such as Cu, Co, and others in the system that the free chlorine is neutralized by excess Sodium Bi-sulfite. The new slime control agent of combined chlorine type is introduced in this paper. This new slime control agent shows superior stability and safeness than that of conventional chloramine type combined chlorine slime control agent. Big benefit that the new slime controller doesn’t cause deterioration by oxidization on the PA membranes, and also big benefit that the treatment system can be significantly simplified are obtained by this new slime controller. Practical applications, their effects, and safeness against deterioration by oxidation of PA membranes are introduced by showing experimental data, pilot plant operations and commercial plants operations.
