Percent Transmittance of 253.7nm Through the Quartz Sleeves Surrounding Ultraviolet Lamp in the Household Water Reactor
This study is part of the detailed performance evaluation of the household ultraviolet water purifier.Ultraviolet water purifier/Photo-reactor is normally composed of three housings, namely for propylene yarn cartridge, for granular activated carbon cartridge and for 4-pin ultraviolet lamp. The ultraviolet lamp is surrounded by a quartz sleeve so that it does not have direct contact with water flowing between sleeve and the surrounding metallic jacket. One of the important factors for the low performance of the water reactor was thought to be the weak ultraviolet transmittance through the material of the sleeve. As pure quartz is more than 80% transmitting for 253.7 nm, so it was necessary to have detailed study on the subject. In this spectroscopic study a number of labeled sleeves were analyzed for percent transmittance of the ultraviolet rays. It was found that the green sleeve, widely circulating in the market was just a Pyrex glass test tube having zero percent transmittance for the germicidal wavelength.
