Late Ordovician Foliomena Fauna (Brachiopoda) of South China
INTRODUCTION:Foliomena, established by Havlí©ek (1952) based on Strophomena folium Barrande, 1879 from the Upper Ordovician Dvur Formation of the Czech Republic, is a characteristic strophomenide brachiopod genus (family Foliomenidae, superfamily Strophomenoidea; Cocks and Rong, 2000). Its diagnostic features include: a small thin shell without radial ornamentation, small and bilobed cardinal process and a pair of welldeveloped side septa in dorsal interior, while the ventral valve has an apical spine but lacks dental plates. Sheehan (1973) proposed the Foliomena community while investigating the early Ashgillian (Late Ordovician) brachiopods of southern Sweden, and interpreted it as a relatively deep water assemblage living on muddy substrates.
