Study on Biostability of Poly (trimethylene terephthalate) Filament to Hydrolytic Degradation in Normal Saline

It is proposed to use poly (trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) filaments as yarns for vascular prosthesis because of their low Youngs modulus, good elasticity and elastic recovery. For the purpose, the biostability of PTT filaments is studied. Normal saline is used as an artificial body fluid. The filaments are subjected to neutral environments for a period up to 16 weeks under the ambient temperature at 37℃. The change of weight loss, tensile properties, crystallinity and conformation of trimethylene glycol segments are tested. The results show that the filaments have good in vitro biostability up to 16 weeks degradation in normal saline at 37℃.
