Preparation and Research of TSF/CMCS Blend Membranes

In this paper tussah silk fibroin (TSF)/Carboxymethylchitosan (CMCS) blend membranes with different weight ratio were prepared and their properties, such as moisture absorption, water solubility and mechanical properties were investigated. The study revealed that the blend membranes had minimum moisture absorption at TSF/CMCS ratio of 95/5. In addition, with the content of CMCS increased, the rate of water solubility of blend membranes increased gradually. The structure of blend membranes were measured by the X-ray diffraction and the results showed that the blend membranes with TSF/ CMCS ratio of 95/5 exhibited maximum crystallinity. When the content of CMCS was more than 15%, the intensity of diffraction peaks of TSF/CMCS membranes reduced gradually, at the same time, there appeared obvious characteristic diffraction peaks of CMCS in the diffraction curves, indicating of the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds within excessive CMCS. The TSF/CMCS blend membranes showed a phase separation structure.
