Electrospinning and Post-spin Treatment of Regenerated Silk Fibroin Nanofibers
In this stud.y, we had successfully fabricated nanofibers with regenerated silk fibroin (RSF, from Bombyx mori) aqueous solution via electrospinning. As-spun fibers were treated with 75% ethanol vapor and pure methanol vapor, respectively. After immersing the membranes in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) for 4 days, the morphology of nanofibrous membranes treated with 75% ethanol vapor had no obvious change; however, the methanol vapor treated nanofibers had swelled slightly as shown by SEM. The C13-NMR and WAXD analysis demonstrated that both the ethanol and methanol treatments rendered the structure of RSF nanofibrous membranes transform from silk Ⅰ form (which is dominated by random coil/αhelical conformation) to silk Ⅱ (in which β-sheet conformation prevails). As a green processing, 75% ethanol vapor treatment not only improves the water-resistant property of SF nanofibrous membranes, but also is a beneficial sterilization way for drug loaded SF nanofibers.
