Fractional and Structural Characterization of Natural Biopolymers from Cottonseed Coat Waste

Four different biopolymer fractions were successively extracted from the holocellulose of cottonseed coat wastes by 14%, 17.5%, 24% NaOH then 17.5% NaOH-4% H3BO3. Carbohydrate analysis demonstrated that xyloses and glucoses were the main sugars of the isolated materials. The four polysaccharides all appeared low molecular weights and small degree of polydispersity. Structural analysis implied that the biopolymers were mainly low-branched β-( 1, 4)- xylans and glucans or xyloglucans. Their thermal properties were similar to the hemicelluloses and celluloses isolated from wheat straw.
