Preparation of Surface Etched Ultra-fine Fibers via Electrospun Unsaturated Polyester Macromonomers/poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)

It is expected that etched ultra-fine fibers can be prepared via electrospinning of two immiscible polymers blend and subsequently removing one of the polymers using selective solvent. Such fibers may have potential applications for sustained drug release. In this study, a new preparing method for etched ultra-fine fibers via cross-linking and solvent washing was developed. A blend fiber was composed by unsaturated polyester macromonomers /poly (3hydroxybutyrateco-3-hydroxyvalerate) (UPM/PHBV). When the PHBV content increased to a certain level, the fibers showed special etched surfaces because much more soluble PHBV was washed by solvent. The adsorption and releasing effect increased with increasing PHBV content, which could be useful in sustained drug release or nanofiltration.
