A Comparative Study of Low Stress Mechanical Properties of Chitosan and Cotton Fabrics for Medical Textiles

Chitosan is widely employed in biomedical areas for its biocompatibility and bacteriostatic property. It has become of great interest as a new functional material with high potential in replacing cotton as medical textiles. In this study, chitosan fabric and cotton fabrics were woven to explore the low stress mechanical properties using Kawabata Evaluation System Fabric (KES-F). All determination of 16 parameters was obtained for measuring compression, shear, tensile, bending and surface properties. The results demonstrated that chitosan fabric has superior mechanical properties and it was good enough to replace cotton fabrics for patients clothing in hospitals from the aspect of hand feel.
