Aging and Mechanism of the Fabric Component in Explanted AAAs Stent-grafts

The objective of the study was to observe the aging of the fabric component used in explanted AAAs stentgraft devices from reoperation patients and analyze the aging mechanism of the explanted stent-graft in order to lay stress on the relationship between the fabrics structures and properties and the possible causes of the aging of the grafts. Two devices were harvested at reoperation. A fabric received from the manufacturer and a device that was not implanted were used as controls. Base on the ISO 25539-1, segments of two explants were selected to analyze textile characteristics, mechanical property and physicochemical properties compared with the controls. The observation of morphology was another important method. The two devices harvested at reoperation present different levels of abrasion. Most testing indexes show no obvious difference between the explanted grafts and the control ones. The main failure mode is the abrasion of the yarns at the contact of the sharp edges of two consecutive Nitinot wire stents. The aging phenomena mainly presents the different degrees abrasions of the graft resulted in the risk of endoleak, which is related to the tip of the zig zag wires. The minor one is related to the duration of the implantation and pulsation pressure. The author is in prospect of conducting the imitated experiment in vitro in order to study the aging mechanism further.
