The Fabrication of D-pantothenic Acid Loaded Silk Fibroin Nanofibrous Membrane

Pantothenic acid, usually known as vitamin B5 (VB5), is a cofactor and plasticizer of many skin disease treatments and cosmetic products. Therefore, it is pivotal to fabricate the appropriate vehicle so as to deliver VB5 more effectively to meet the need for using topically. In our present study, composite nanofibers, including regenerated silk fibroin (RSF, from Bombyx mori) and D-pantothenic acid (hemicalcium salt, VB5-hs), were fabricated via electrospinning with aqueous solution. SEM showed that the average diameter of VB5-hs loaded SF (VB5-hs/SF) nanofibers increased with the increasing of SF concentration. XPS analysis demonstrated that VB5-hs was successfully loaded into resulting nanofibers. After the treatment with 75% ethanol vapor, as-spun nanofibrous membrane had a good water-resistance. The fine structure on the surface of nanofibers was quantified using AFM, and the results showed that the post-spin treatment rendered nanofibers become rough. As a transdermal and dermal therapeutic vehicle of VB5-hs, the composite nanofibrous membrane could be more effective to control the release of VB5-hs.
