Fabrication and Characterization of Collagen/PLLA-CL Composite Vascular Grafts

The purpose of this work is to develop a novel type of tissue-engineered vascular scaffold via electrospinning technique. Collagen and PLLA-CL was selected as the materials to mimic the native extracellular matrix and fabricate the multi layered scaffold. The morphology of composite grafts was studied by Scanning Electron Microscope, and the diameter of them was in the range of 100 nm~1,500 nm. Mechanical tests demonstrated that the layer formed by PLLA-CL could support the whole grafts with enough strength and flexibility. Cell viability studies with endothelial cells showed that cell morphology could remain to be normal due to the excellent biocompatibility of collagen. These results indicated that the composite fibrous scaffolds made from electrospinning had the potential for vessel repair.
