Properties Study of Wool Whiskers and Its Application
For many years, attempts have been made to unravel the complex hierarchy of wool fibres, with the aim of investigating the chemical and biological characteristics of individual wool fibres components. One of these components, wool whiskers, can be extracted in a stepwise combination of chemical and mechanical methods, but the strength of the whisker and its application fields have not yet been reported in the literature. In this paper, a homogeneous keratin composite was prepared from a bio-inspired perspective, in which the wool whiskers were blended within a keratin matrix. Compared with heterogeneous composites (reinforced by potassium hexatitanate (K2 Ti6O13 ) whiskers), wool whiskers were more effective at improving the tensile strength and Youngs modulus of the composite. Homogeneous keratin composites might be promising materials for application in bio-medical fields. In addition, using a modified law of mixtures, the average tensile strength of a wool whisker was calculated at 649 MPa.
