Measurement Method for Relationship of Ultrasonic Wave Velocity and Temperature
A simple and feasible experimental method is presented for measuring the relationship of the propagation velocity of ultrasonic wave and temperature. The method involves a circular flat plate and a vertically welded waveguide with the same materials, in which welding with full penetration is used to eliminate the interface pulse. The waveguide is cooled with a water jacket, so that the waveguide end is kept with the temperature lower enough to allow the use of conventional ultrasonic probe and coupling medium. With the temperature distribution in the waveguide at different plate temperature determined by finite element analysis and proper simplification, the constant in the supposed relationship between sound velocity and temperature is easily determined by Matlabs optimization tool with a objective function based on equal sound traveling time. In the same time, thermal expansion, sound velocity, component dimensions, ultrasonic thickness gauge reading, plate temperature and temperature distribution in waveguide are all in consideration. The proposed method is verified to be feasible and has high precision for stainless steel 0Cr18Ni9.
