Novel Optical Fiber Sensor for Evaluation of Exposure Threshold of Photocurable Resin Composites
The purpose of this study was to develop a novel optical fiber sensor for evaluating the exposure threshold of photocurable resin composites. The method was founded on the leaking mode mechanism of the optical fiber liquid level sensor and the material absorbance theory. In this research, a new fiber sensor, which was made of the same photocurable resin composite and cured to its fully cured state, was developed to measure the liminal exposure time for a certain cure depth of the photocurable resin composite according to the refractive index variation during the photopolymerization. The relevant exposure intensity can be computed by Beer-Lambert law. By this way, the exposure threshold can be evaluated. The photocurable epoxy acrylate was researched in this experiment. The experiment revealed the method can provide an unambiguous exposure threshold with low cost and easy implementation.
