Simulation Methods Used in LCA:Important Concepts and Practice

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provides a systematic approach to assess the resource use and environmental releases in products whole life cycle. It iS a valuable advisor for life cycle design and management. The core of LCA is the model over the system (the lifecycle of product) and the calculations made on it,i.e.Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) analysis. Thus,it is related to the modelling and simulation area, There is a great potential of simulation-based LCA, because modelling and simulation technology can solve the critical problerns of a) interpreting a real complex life cycle in a simplified and computational way.It iS often difficult to find analytical solutions to the description of product life cycle, because various factors ranging from product features to behaviours of different life cycle participates (manufacturer, user, policy, etc.).are interrelated in a Complicated manner.Simulation based approaches can be a promising method to address this problem;b)revealing the systems behaviours which may not be able to be observed in the real physical world at current point of time using current technology. In this paper, relations between general Concepts of modelling and simulation and LCA are explained and then how simulation methods can enhance the usability and quality of LCA is demonstrated by some modelling and simulation practices within the LCA framework
