A Study on the Eco-Performance of Plastics in the Injection Molding Process
Widely used in products, plastic materials have diverse eco-performance over the life cycle from material production, inject molding,to end-oflife.Consequently,the choice of the materials can make a major contribution to the eco-friendliness of products. This paper reports a study on eight types of plastic materials on their eco performance during the plastic injection process. The materials include both bioplastics (PHA,PLA,and TPS) and fossil-based plastics (PP,PS,HDPE,PET,and PVC).Instead of conducting a full Life Cycle Assessment(LCA). this study focused on establishing relationships between the energy consumption, relevant plastic material properties, and the injection molding equipment.Ecoperformance in terms of energy consumptions by each of the selected plastics is obtained and analyzed. In addition to the relative values of each plastic studied.a comparison between the bioplastics and the conventional fossilbased thermoplastics at the injection molding process is made. Limitations of the results and further studies are discussed and proposed.
