Comparison of Eco-Design Tools for the Conceptual Design Phase

Environment should be taken into account as a design objective with others as early as during the concept design phase in order to achieve sustainable products. One of the problems associated with conceptual design is the lack of appropriate tools to help designers to include environmental objectives during the conceptual design phase. There exists a number of ecodesign tools developed and claim to be providing the necessary support for the designers (particularly Simplified Life Cycle Assessment tools (SLCA)). However there is no comparative analysis to demonstrate the extent of support and the effectiveness of these tools during the concept design phase. Therefore, this paper presents a comparative assessment of existing SLCA tools from an engineer point of view. The effectiveness of these tools was demonstrated by using case studies and a list of requirement was established for future development.
