Defining the Dimensions of Human Work for Industrial Sustainability Assessment

Human work plays an essential role in virtually all stages of the product or system life cycle,yet it has been given scant attention in sustainability assessment, especially in terms of social aspens.An initial study is described that identifies a set of dimensions along which the social sustainability of work may be assessed. Work and social sustainability are defined.literature on the individual and social impacts of work is summarized,a preliminary set of work dimensions is proposed,and future research to refine the set and develop social sustainability assessment tools for engineere and other decision makers is discussed.
