Interdecadal Variability of East Asian Summer Monsoon:the roles of Sea Surface Temperature and direct Atmospheric Radiative Forcings

We present a study on the roles of observed surface temperature (SST) and direct atmospheric radiative forcing (due to observed changes in time-varying well-mixed volcanic, ozone, greenhouse gas,aerosol and solar output used in the CCSM3 “Climate of the 20th century integrations) in the interdecadal variability of East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) during the second half of the twentieth century by means of experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model, NCAR CAM3 (Community Atmospheric Model). Three numerical experiments are conducted by specifying the observed time-varying global SSTs, tropical Pacific SSTs and global SSTs plus direct atmospheric radiative forcing, respectively. Results suggest that 1) CAM3 realistically simulates the interdecadal weakening of EASM occurred in the mid-late 1970s when these foreings in these three experiments are specified and the modeled atmospheric circulation anomalies are found appreciable between the strong and weak EASM periods, in better agreement with observations;2) SST changes in the global and tropical Pacific also contribute to the interdecadal weakening of EASM occurred in the mid-late of 1970s, indicating that SST changes over these regions play important role in this EASM shift and the tropical Pacific is a key region to impact it;3) the direct atmospheric radiative forcing plays a suppressing role in the interdecadal variability of EASM.
