Characterizing the Urban Heat Island in Beijing Using Landsat Imagery
In this letter, the spatial pattern of urban heat island (UHI) as well as its relationship with urbanization in Beijing was analyzed using archived Landsat TM and ETM+ thermal band images. Spatial autocorrelation and semivariance were used to quantitatively characterize the spatial pattern of UHI. The result showed that the significant spatial pattern was present in UHI. Spatial scales indicated that the average size of homogeneous patches dominated with the urbanized and urbanizing area increased remarkably. But random factors also played an important role in determining the spatial heterogeneity of UHI. It was also concluded that increasing vegetation coverage can be effective in mitigating the UHI effect in the urban area.
