Analyzing the Relationship between Urban Heat Hsland and Land Use/cover Types in Nanjing Using Remote Sensing Images

In this study, three scenes of Landsat TM/ETM+ images covering Nanjing area were used to monitor urban heat island(UHI), selecting one scene to analyze the relationship between the average land surface temperature(LST) and the land use/cover type. The study selected three indexes, e.g. Normalized Difference Build-up Index (NDBI),Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index(SAVI),Modified Normalized Difference Water Index(MNDWI),to get major urban use/cover types. The results showed that the urban or built-up area in Nanjing had increased from 1988 to 2006. There was obvious heat island effect in Nanjing, heat island intensity (HII) is 1-3 level higher in urban as compared to suburbs. Urban thermal field of different space had great discrepancies, with the expansion of city, there was the fast growth of the heat island region since 1988, the heat island effect was even more remarkable in the newly urbanized regions and emerges the trend of expansion to the south. The regions that there are more build-up areas in the sun and higher-density human are city’s high-temperature zone, the urban parks with the larger water bodies and the thicker vegetation are the cold islands, Yangtze River is the lowesttemperature zone, so that the water and the highly dense vegetation in urban helped mitigate the thermal effect. There were high correlation between LST and the area of different urban use/cover types. Different proportion of the land use/cover types were the formation of different thermal environment, the reasonable plan of urbanization helped to improve the quality of environment, especially, to improve urban thermal environment.
