Alternative Visualization Display for Future Air Management Using Non-Conventional Devices

Contemporary air management systems face the enormous challenge of how to cope with the dramatic growth in air traffic demand in the future, not only in terms of maintaining safety of flights but also in the management of flight operations so as to minimize complexity of encounters. Using various kinds of innovative non-conventional devices, display systems can develop completely novel interaction possibilities to enable users to adapt to the visual representation to suit their own needs, allowing them to explore the underlying information space. This paper outlines our investigation on the concept and design of interactions in up-to-date, alternative visualization displays for air traffic management, with a series of investigations conducted for the relevant depth perception capacity in these display. Preliminary results for 3D-in-2D displays project are included in this paper. For future design purposes, the goal is to seek innovations involving new technology, the opportunities these create, and radically different forms of work.
