Watershed Segmentation-Based 3D Medical Volumetric Data Measurement and Volume Rendering

Image segmentation and visualization of volumetric data have close connection to each other. Tissue structure in medical images is complex and has vague edges, but the user is only interested in region of interest (ROI) of tissues or parts of the body. Thus, region segmentation, extraction and visualization are much more important. This paper proposes ROI segmentation, measurement and volume rendering of 3D medical volumetric data. First, medical volumetric data were rendered in 2D texture slices while only one slice was display on computer screen at a time;Second, watershed segmentation algorithm was used to extract ROI and the segmented regions were masked. So it can get the ROI edges with one pixel width and high accuracy. At last, ray casting algorithm was used for 3D reconstruction and measurement of ROI of volumetric data. Due to rendering, the segmented ROI and large number of empty spaces were skipped in volumetric data, thus it could accelerate volume rendering. The experiment results showed that the technique of volume rendering combined with watershed segmentation provided new technology for observation and measurement of ROI in 3D medical volumetric data.
