The Relationship between Path Radiance and Transmittance and its Application in Water Vapor Content Retrieval over Ocean
This paper presents a new method to estimate the total atmospheric water vapor content (TWVC) over sea surface, considering the good linear correlation between the transmittance and the path radiance. Comparison is made between our method and the Linear atmosphere-surface temperature relationship (LASTR), which based on a linear relationship between the effective atmospheric temperature in AVHRR Channel 4 and sea surface temperature. Simulated data that carried out with MODTRAN 4.0 combined with the latest global assimilated data and the practical observations show that our method is more suitable, comparing with the insitu radiosonde data. The new method is capable of estimating the TWVC with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.15 g/cm2, whereas the LASTR method predicts the TWVC with a RMSE of 0.97 g/cm2. So the proposed method is able to provide a better estimation of the TWVC.
