The HK Marine Energy Consortium & development of Marine Energy Research Collaboration
Through this paper we announce the proposed set-up in HK of a Marine Energy Research Consortium (HK MERC).Its purpose is to bring together all those in HK interested to develop marine energy applications locally, regionally and beyond. This action is precipitated by the urgent need for an emissions-free,clean and reliable source of electricity-generation and is prompted by the pace of marine energy technology development.Internationally, marine energy concepts have progressed to commercial realization in merely 10 years indicating that there is not only technology prowess but also strong economic incentives to accelerate advancement. The newly formed School of Energy and Environment in the City University of Hong Kong, headed by Professor Johnny Chan,is leading HK MERCs set-up.HK MERC is intended as an inclusive organization bringing together academics, business, financiers, government, industry, and the general public as stakeholders to develop the technology and its applications. Extensively applied, marine energy will serve not only remote island communities but make a direct contribution to the electricity networks and overall grid stability. Direct experience in HK is modest. We are therefore looking to develop partnerships, collaborative research programmes and demonstration projects in which our different skills are shared to mutual benefit. We acknowledge the considerable expertise of the Chinese marine energy researchers as well as those of the UK & Scotland.Through this Symposium we invite closer ties and ideally the set-up of a UK/Scotland and China/HK Marine Energy Research Collaboration.A Roundtable discussion is planned (18 September) to explore those opportunities. All interested are welcome to attend.
