Chinas Tropical Forest Management Paradigms Based on a Combination of Economy and Ecology

Chinese forests are divided into public and commercial forests. Thus, some forests are managed for purely economic purposes and others are managed for purely ecological purpo ses. Although much of the climate in China is temperate, a small amount of tropical forest ex ists. Chinese tropical forests are managed under an integrated development model that focuses on sustainability and was established after many years of research on Hainan tropical forests. The basis of the integrated development model is the use of economic and social means to solve social-economic problems which are undermining tropical forest resources. In natural forests, scientific models based on the cutting and renewal of forests is implemented using standards and indexes of ITTO (the International Tropical Timber Organization) sustainable management for the protection of natural forests and biodiversity. Areas surrounding the forests are encour aged to develop intensive agriculture, animal husbandry, courtyard economy and ecological ag riculture that operates in a manner that protects and improves the forest ecosystem while boos ring the local economy and benefiting local people. Tropical timber forest plantations that a chieve high quality and yield in accordance with the principles of the management model are promoted. The integrated development model is aimed at developing wood-based industries that enhance employment and income in tropical forest areas.
