Experimental analysis of flow through external spur gear pumps
This paper presents the results of an experimental activity performed on a external spur gear pump where a telemetry system is used for a non intrusive measurement of the internal pressure. A detailed description of the experimental apparatus as well as the explanation of the methodology utilized for its calibration are also provided. The aim of the developed test rig is to provide a clear understanding of the flow through the pump by means of a simultaneous acquisition of the pressure inside a tooth space volume on the driver gear, of the gear angular position and of the instantaneous value of pressure at pump delivery port. The presented results pertain to a particular stock gear pump, that utilises a modified driver gear with a miniaturized pressure sensor, considering two different geometrical designs for the bearing blocks.
