Research on PMA-actuated knee-joint rehabilitation-training device for exercises of isokinetic CPM and ARM

A knee-joint rehabilitation-training device actuated by pneumatic muscle actuator (PMA) is developed, and its configuration and working principle are explained. The control performances in isokinetic continuous passive motion (CPM) and active resistance motion (ARM) are investigated. The experimental research is performed by using the weight blocks to simulate the legs masses and muscle powers of different human body. The results verify that the device is capable of actuating the knee-joint of different human body to complete the exercises of isokinetic CPM and ARM. The angle and angle velocity of motion are adjustable. In ARM, the resistance torque created by PMA can adaptively change with both the torque created by the gravity of leg and the torque created by legs muscle power. This provides the beneficial reference in designing the new legs rehabilitation-training system.
