Hydrodynamics of horizontal axis marine current turbines
The combination of Xfoil and blade element momentum method has been used to predict the performance of marine current turbines. An open code Xfoil was adopted to predict the performance of 2D airfoil sections. The pressure distribution, lift, drag and cavitation characteristic for a representative foil of N AC A 63-815 at various pitch angles were analyzed. The numerical prediction of 3D model was carried out with blade element momentum method, which showed satisfactory agreement with experiment. And performance of a new designed turbine was presented. Overall, the investigation of hydrodynamic performance especially output power and cavitation characteristic should assist in the design and operation of marine current turbines.
