NIGHT SOIL COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATION IN MEGACITY: A CASE STUDY

With the development of social economy and the accelerating urbanization, the night soil pollution has caused a lot of environmental problems in Shenzhen city of China. For controlling the pollution, we proposed that the night soil disposal plant can collect the waste by paying the cleaning companies, which encourages companies transport the night soil to the appointed location but not dump the waste elsewhere. For evaluating the transportation cost, we built a mixed-integer programming model whose objective is to minimize the transportation cost. Considering the empirical case of Shenzhen city, the model is a large-scale one and can’t be solved by common optimization tools or traditional algorithms, which makes us to develop a special heuristic algorithm for the solution. We input the real data into the model and get the suboptimal solu tion in which the minimized transportation cost is provided.
