RESEARCH ON IMPROVING VMI STRATEGY BY INTRODUCING THIRD-PARTY LOGISTICS
Most researches on VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) evaluated its effect only from the buyer’s stand point. In fact, not only the influence on the buyer but on the whole supply chain should be considered. In the short-term, VMI is found to be able to increase supplier’s logistics costs under certain cost conditions, espe cially when the mismatch between the buyer’s and supplier’s inventory systems is not significant. Supplier’s lack of incentive has already become the main reason why VMI isn’t universally adopted. Based on other scholars’researches, this paper tries to perfect the traditional model of VMI by taking the correlation between transport costs and EOQ (Economic Order Quantity) into account. The certain cost condition on which suppli er’s short-term cost tends to increase is found through the new model studying. The introduction of TPL ( Third-Party Logistics) is found to be helpful to reduce supplier’s logistics costs and increase his short-term profit under VMI, which can inspirit suppliers to take part in VMI.
