Personnel Make Up of an Innovative Technology Organization
The thrust of most technology based organizations, be it from the disciplines of chemistry, biology, physics or electronics is innovation. Without innovation or an innovative core of people, these organizations quickly become dated and fall out of the upper echelons of technology competitive companies. This paper discusses the issues of how to remain competitive and the aspects of the human side of being innovative, that is the personnel make up that forces competitiveness. The paper studies 3 organizations, one that is established with 20 years in the business with over 800 employees worldwide, the second that was established 40 years ago but had to restructure to survive in the last 3 years in a medical electronics arena which employs over 80 employees and finally a plastics firm which had to shift its business into electronics packaging again to survive with 25 employees. The paper reveals some interesting areas, namely that the inertia in innovative technology based companies comes from all aspects within the organization, not only the engineering team, and for the entire organization to be innovative and competitive, the make up of personnel is important, so that there are synergies within the organization to enable a constant innovative core.
