European Military R&D Collaboration and Defence Industry Consolidation
This paper explores the unusually murky outcome of the European defence industry consolidation process in light of political pressures for European solutions, institutional support to this end, remarkable political-economic convergence due to the internal market scheme and the comprehensive level of both civil and defence related R&D collaboration. The question posed is: why did firms which share technology and customers - and which are subjected to fairly uniform political and market pressures - not merge?
