The Effectiveness of Interactions in the Intermediate Sector: From the Viewpoint of SI(Systems of Innovation)
This study attempts to explore the contributions of collaborative R&D and financing to the success of innovative activities from the viewpoint of national innovation system (NIS). We use 177 R&D project data from 104 firms in the Korean electronic parts and mechanical industries. Both industries are regarded as typical of the intermediate sector, which has been leading to the rapid technological advances in recent years. At first, we divide our data with two main criteria: type of innovation (product vs. process) and source of innovation (demand-pull vs. technology-push). The empirical analysis is based on these four domains. Then, we use the Binary Logit Model (BLM) in our empirical work because all the dependent variables in the studies are either 0 (failure) or 1 (success). The main findings of this research are as follows. (1) Financial support from the government in the early stage of R&D and from the demanding firms is shown to be significantly helpful in innovative activities (2) Collaborative R&D, especially with demanding firms and universities is proven to be effective. Based on these results, we can ensure the effects of interactive learning and R&D supports in a firms innovative activities. This study on the success factors in R&D is expected to shed light on the nature of the empirical evidences for systems of innovation approach in general, and on an individual firms innovation strategy in particular.
