Formation of R&D Alliances in Chinese Mobile Telephony Industry
With the development of Chinese economic and technological competences, Chinese companies attract foreign investment not only in production but also in research and development (R&D). Chinese companies are also engaged in building R&D collaborations with foreign companies. This study explores this relatively new and unexplored area of international R&D alliances in China - formation determinants from Chinese perspective. We focus our research on the Chinese mobile telephony industry. Based on a developed database and qualitative interviews with senior R&D managers and strategy managers, we examine forms and foreign partners of R&D alliances and the factors determining such R&D activities in Chinese mobile telephony industry. The findings suggest that the nature of the technology, the characteristics of partners, and the previous cooperation experience between partners are significantly related to the R&D alliance formation.
